It was a nice night. You know, the sort of night where the moon's too bright and the stars are too many. Sort of like a waking dream. Everything's nice and peaceful and right somehow. My belly was full and my lids heavy. Sin and its creatures weren't anywhere near here. The most I had to fear was a curious chocobo.
It was damn near perfect.
Predictably enough Fate whispered.
I hate when it does that. Last time I saw it, was at Operation Mi'ihen. I'd been a lot shorter then. Wasn't supposed to even be there, but my brother...
...
Nevermind. Fate's a bitch.
"No." I said serenely.
I don't think the old dousche was expecting that. He blinked and looked just a little slack jawed. At that point, I should have probably left. But I was content and sleepy and pretty sure he was going to leave so I didn't.
Not my brightest moment.
I guess I should explain. To most people, Fate's a god or an idea. Well, good for you, he probably is. I wouldn't know. The Fate I know is just an ornery old (not to mention ugly. Would it hurt him to bathe? Or look in the mirror?) bastard who's got all the cosmic power in the universe at his fingertips and likes messing with people's heads.
Yeah, I dunno. Maybe it's me that's crazy.
For some reason, he thinks I'm a Hero. Well la-dee-da. Last time I saw a heroic thief she was about five feet tall and kicked ass in so many directions that I was pretty sure the thief thing was just talk. A freaking ninja that's what she was.
"YoU MuST BECOME the SavIOR SPIRA nEEds," Fate spoke, regaining composure. And yeah, Fate spoke in partial capitals. It sounds a lot like someone with a voice that cracks both up and down. I don't think anyone could mimic it.
"No," I repeated. All I wanted was a good long nap and a trip to civilization and then, if I was really lucky, a hot shower. "Lookit. I'm a thief. I'm not strong or pretty or heroic."
That's not to say I hadn't tried. But all dreams are fragile. Especially the pretty bit. I haven't the faintest clue how guys can pull it off at all.
"Go bother a warrior or somethin-"
His eyes escaped from beneath the ridges. For a moment I understood everything that there ever was and ever would be.
Then the world went white.
===============================
Katar's angsty. He angsts about his brother, his family (they aren't, they remind him pointedly, dead yet. He tells them they will be), his future and most of all, he angsts about Fate. To everyone and anyone who'll listen to him. Admittedly, it's hard to tell if he's being satirical or serious and it seems that half the time he doesn't himself truly know.
(He doesn't brood. There's a difference between angst and broodiness that's a mile wide and an eternity deep, he'll tell you, waxing all philosophical like. Then he'll make farting noises with his armpit)
He's annoying. There isn't a good thing he says about anyone (unless they feed him or pay him) but he tends to be particularly irreverent about Yevon. In a nonetheless classically Katar-ish way, he's still considers himself a devout Yevonite. He just happens to say blasphemous things but that doesn't really matter because Yevon is all-knowing and all-forgiving, right?
He particularly dislikes heroes. Of all stripes and colors. But what he hates the most is the fact that he's a hero-in-the-making and pigheadedly does his best to resist this particular fate. He's become a thief, a liar and an annoying little ----- just to make sure it doesn't happen.
Oh. Don't tell anyone, but he secretly adores every single chocobo on his parents' farm and can tell them all apart.
Appearance
Height: 171 cm
Weight: 59 kg
Build: He looks thin but is mostly bone and compact muscle
Skin Colour: A lightly tanned beige
Hair Style: Like straw, it sticks out at crazy angles.
Hair Colour: Orange-blond
Eye Colour: Brown
Clothing: Cursed, he must continuously wear his armor. It annoys him greatly, yes it does. [see picture and refer to armor descriptions]
Weapons
Yevon Quick Blade - A competently crafted steel shortsword that is held in a special scabbard located on Katar's right pauldron. The hilt is covered in black leather while the pommel is inscribed with the symbol of Yevon.
Fate's Broadsword - This Broadsword is big, impressive and completely
Armour
Fate's Heroic Arm [Magic Slot] - Katar's left arm is encased in a powerfully enchanted set of plate armor of some undefined material that's light and sturdy. It's so powerfully enchanted that it won't come off. Katar's only slightly peeved about this. Passive Strength Enhancement.
Fate's Heroic Left Pauldron: Mentioned before, there's a scabbard attached to its surface. It is joined with the Heroic arm at the back by a white cape. Light and sturdy. The only piece of armor that Katar would even remotely think of keeping of all of the set.
Fate's White Cape: Though it doesn't stop blades, magic or even a snowball, Katar can't figure out how to get rid of it. It reforms every morning without fail despite how many times it's cut off, hacked to bits, burned, frozen, melted and so on during the day before.
Leather Armor: Better than nothing, Katar wears a thin leather vest around his torso. It's his and if anyone thinks about putting their grimy little fingers on it...
Softsteel boots: Thief boots, these are built to be quiet but reinforced with metal for added protection. Mobility is what is important for a thief so they need their feet protected! Only slightly better protection than leather shoes.

History
Katar was born as the second son of two Chocobo Ranchers. Leard, his older brother, was particularly gifted in combat and despite his parents misgivings, enlisted to become a Chocobo Knight where he quickly became a prominent figure.
In Katar's eyes anyway. The two of them were separated by a span of nearly ten years and Katar adored his older brother, just as his older brother tended to dote on him.
Leard died in Operation Mi'ihen.
Something changed in Katar after that. He became withdrawn and distant, prone to mood swings and sarcastic bouts of verbal sparring that were much too serious. He never quite lost his faith with Yevon, but despises most of the higher chains of command. Operation Mi'ihen would have worked he's sure, if the leaders had been more competent and drawn out better battle plans.
No one knew, but Katar believed that he met Fate. He went off on a pilgrimage to discover himself (i.e. ran away from home) and fell in with the wrong crowd.
Well, others might perceive them that way. Katar was fairly certain they were the 'right' crowd and he became a thief. Fate met with him a few more times but each time, Katar told him/her/it to go away. Often accompanied by rude hand signals.
One day, however, Fate couldn't take a no for an answer. And that's when everything started to go downhill...
